Yard Operator

Job Summary

We are seeking an organized and skilled Yard Operator to coordinate the movement of trailers, trucks, and equipment within a logistics yard or distribution center. This behind-the-scenes role ensures the yard runs smoothly by preparing trailers for loading, relocating equipment, and supporting inbound and outbound traffic flow.

Responsibilities

• Move trailers between dock doors, staging areas, and yard spaces safely and efficiently.
• Assist with yard inventory, trailer assignments, and equipment readiness.
• Operate yard jockey trucks, hostlers, or terminal tractors within company guidelines.
• Monitor trailer conditions, verify seals, and report maintenance issues immediately.
• Work closely with warehouse and dispatch teams to align trailer availability with loading needs.
• Comply with all yard safety rules and traffic patterns.

Qualifications and Experience

• Valid CDL and previous experience as a yard jockey or similar role.
• Strong trailer maneuvering and backing skills in confined spaces.
• Ability to follow scheduling instructions and work independently.
• Familiarity with yard management systems or trailer tracking software is a plus.
• Reliable attendance and safety-first attitude required.

Salary

Pay varies based on route type, driver experience, and employment structure (company driver). Drivers can expect competitive per-mile rates, hourly wages, or percentage-based pay. Additional incentives may be offered for safe driving, fuel efficiency, and on-time delivery.
